Firefighter Testing Process

Two written examinations:

Practical Skills Test (PST)

This tests reasoning skills, spatial rotation, matrix reasoning and matching parts and figures.  There are 83 questions. 

Writing Abilities Test (WAT)

This test measures proficiency in spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure specific to the English language.  There are 80 items on this test.

Only the top scoring 125 applicants who successfully pass both written examinations with at least a minimum passing score of 70 percent on each examination will advance to the physical ability portion of the testing.

Physical Ability Walk through

Top 125 applicants will have an opportunity to walk through the Physical Ability Test.  see below for complete details on the test.

B-PAD

This test is a timed video performance test.  Applicants will be videotaped responding to different 'real-life' video scenarios.  Applicants will have 45 seconds to explain how he/she would respond in each situation.

Only those applicants who successfully pass the B-PAD test will continue in the testing process.

Structured Oral Interview

Measures verbal and communication abilities, decision making skills, and interpersonal skills.

Only those applicants who successfully pass the Structured Oral Interview may be forwarded for consideration for a Fire Chief's interview.

Top applicants will be selected for Fire Chief's Interview.
