Avalanches can occur without warning in the Municipality.  Awareness of avalanche danger is necessary to remain safe.​

Avalanche Preparedness:
  • If you live in an avalanche area, make a plan for how you will leave the area, and take your emergency kit(s) when you leave.
  • Be aware of avalanche conditions​ when travelling.  Avalanches often cover major roadways in Southcentral Alaska.
  • Have an avalanche beacon, helmet, ​avalanche probe, shovel and avalanche airbag​​ with you when recreating in an avalanche area
  • Know the signs of avalanche
    • ​​Shooting cracks across slopes
    • Other recent avalanches in the area
Stay Safe During an Avalanche:
  • ​Use and carry safety equipment and rescue gear
  • If someone you are with is buried, call 9-1-1 and begin searching if ​​​it is safe to do so
  • If you have the training, treat others for suffocation, hypothermia, traumatic injury​ and shock​
