“Disc”overing New Heights at the Canine Frisbee Championships

Exciting Paw to Paw Competition on Sunday, June 7 2009 (tentatively).
Awesome Aussies, leaping Labs, bounding Border Collies and magnificent mixed breeds will be taking to the skies over Anchorage when the Municipality of Anchorage, Parks & Recreation Department hosts the 2009 Skyhoundz Canine Frisbee Championships on Sunday, June, 7 2009 (tentatively). Families and sports enthusiasts are invited to come and enjoy an exciting afternoon on the Parkstrip and cheer on the most entertaining four-legged athletes in the area. Competition is expected to be ruff this year and there will be a lot of fur flying. Unlike professional athletes, many of the four-legged competitors are eager to provide pawdagraphs and kisses from fans. This event takes place at 1:00pm at the Delaney Parkstrip Soccer Field (10th & L Street) east of the Rose Garden. On-site registration begins at noon and continues until the start of the event (or until registration forms are gone). Previous experience is not required and is limited to the first 50 registrants. Skyhoundz Championships is a boneafied sports events which welcomes novice and veteran competitors alike. The event is free of charge. “Disc”over your dog’s talent and see what your canine companion is capable of.
Competition consists of two 60-second mini-distance rounds. If more than 30 teams are registered, the second round will be limited to the top scorers from the first round. Owners can supply their own frisbees for the championships if dogs are not use to the hard plastic ones that are provided. Thrower may enter up to two dogs at this event. Points are awarded on the number of catches each dog does in 60-seconds. Higher points are scored for distance and mid-air catches.

Dog owners/handlers must provide proof of current rabies and a current dog license to register (dog license is only required for participants who reside within the Municipality. The Municipality spans from Girdwood to Knik River Bridge), or bring proof of rabies and purchase a dog license from Anchorage Animal Control the day of the event. Microchipping will be available event day for those wishing to microchip their dog. Frisbees are provided (we have a limited supply) or bring your own; t-shirts and plaques to the top finishers. If on June78, the weather is iffy, call 343-4040 for a pre-recorded message to see if the event is cancelled. A determination will be made by 10:00am. Event will be cancelled if it is raining due to safety reasons. There is no rain out date and the event will be cancelled for 2009.
