Assembly Adds Juneteenth and Indigenous Peoples' Day as Paid Holidays

2/23/2023

After robust public testimony at the Regular Assembly Meeting on February 21, 2023, the Anchorage Assembly voted unanimously to approve AO 2023-17, As Amended, to add Juneteenth and Indigenous Peoples’ Day as paid municipal holidays.

The ordinance adds Juneteenth on June 19 and Indigenous Peoples’ Day on the second Monday in October as paid holidays for municipal employees. The ordinance establishes the changes for executive and non-represented employees as of April 1, 2023 and urges the Administration to confer with bargaining units to adopt the additional holidays as contract amendments effective this year.

“For generations, Black and Indigenous people in Alaska and all over this country have not been treated with respect and dignity that they deserve, that everyone deserves,” said Member Quinn-Davidson during debate on the item. “Black and Indigenous people matter in Alaska. They are an integral part of the culture of Alaska and are worth honoring and celebrating. That is the narrative I want to pass on to my son by formalizing these paid municipal holidays.”

“This is an important ordinance for our community,” said Member Zaletel. “It’s important for the employees of our city to feel seen. It’s so important to acknowledge the people in our community, who we see, who we live with, to feel seen. In the end, it’s the right thing to do.”

“It is so important to see ourselves in government,” said Member Rivera. “These holidays are a meaningful way to reflect on our community and what makes Anchorage a great place to live.”

In 2023, the Municipality will recognize Juneteenth on June 19, 2023 and Indigenous Peoples’ Day on October 9, 2023.
