Anchorage Assembly Chair Christopher Constant has appointed Municipal Election Administrator Jamie Heinz as Acting Municipal Clerk in the process to replace Barbara Jones as Municipal Clerk effective immediately.
Heinz has over 12 years of clerk and election administration experience in Alaskan jurisdictions, including the Municipality of Anchorage, City of Kenai, and the Haines Borough. In 2012, Heinz earned a Certified Municipal Clerk designation and became a Master Municipal Clerk in 2021. She has served on the Executive Board of the Alaska Association of Municipal Clerks since 2018, including a term as President in 2021.
“We successfully conducted a nation-wide search for the next Municipal Clerk and I’m pleased to announce that the best candidate is one of our own,” said Assembly Chair Constant. “Jamie Heinz has a proven track record of leadership in public service, right here in the Municipality and in other Alaska jurisdictions. As much as it pains me to part ways with Clerk Jones, her legacy of accessible, transparent and responsive local government lives on in the Clerk’s Office.”
Municipal Clerk Barbara Jones announced her retirement in March, effective June 30, 2023, after more than 24 years of service to the Municipality of Anchorage.
The Municipal Clerk supervises the Municipal Clerk’s Office and manages the performance of the specific duties detailed in the Municipal Code at AMC 2.20.050B. Specifically, the Municipal Clerk provides administrative, technical, and legislative assistance to Anchorage Assembly, according to Municipal Charter and Municipal code and coordinates with Assembly Branch staff, Municipal departments, and stakeholders to facilitate the execution of the Assembly legislative and administrative functions.
Chair Constant’s appointment is subject to approval by the Anchorage Assembly. A confirmation hearing will be held at a worksession scheduled on Friday, June 23, immediately followed by a special meeting to vote on the confirmation.
