What is Language Access?
As a city, we need to provide meaningful access to Municipal services for everyone who lives and visits Anchorage. That starts with language: creating opportunities for those who want to participate in our economy and communities so our city can thrive.
What is Anchorage doing?
In Anchorage, Language Access has multiple parts to it. As of September 2018, Mayor Berkowitz has enacted Policy and Procedure 16-6, requiring every City agency that comes into contact with the public to learn how to assist someone who is Limited English Proficient (LEP)--meaning they may not be able to fully communicate because of a language barrier. Agencies are in the process of translating documents for LEP individuals and the Mayor's Office is reaching out to communities to raise awareness about this new policy.
