People Mover is celebrating its 49th year of service in the great 49th state!
It's an honor to have been your reliable transportation partner for nearly half a century, connecting our community and making trips across our city more convenient and sustainable.
Since our inception on July 1, 1974, People Mover has provided safe, efficient, and accessible public transportation to residents and visitors alike. Over the years, we have witnessed countless stories, met amazing individuals, and embraced the vibrant spirit of our Alaskan community.

A Ride Through Time
1970's
| 1974 - People Mover begins operation
1978 - Bus Accommodation Center opens downtown

1980's
| 1980 - Double Decker buses operate in downtown Anchorage
1981 - People Mover's first 40' buses put into service
1988 - Dimond Transit Center opens

1990's
| 1991 - Eagle River Transit Center opens
1999 - Entire fleet of 50 buses are fully accessible

2000's
| 2002 - Travel Training facility opens at the Downtown Transit Center
2004 - DART program provided service to outlying areas using 30' buses
2006 - First People Mover bus wrap installed: "Whale of a Time"
2008 - Ridership record for People Mover set with 4,220,667 trips
2009 - BusTracker launched and real-time signs installed at transfer centers

2010's
| 2012 - New fareboxes, Ticket Vending Machine and fare media rolled out, including Smartcards
2014 - Anchorage joins Google Transit
2017 - People Mover system redesign introduces frequent routes, longer hours, and better service
People Mover mTicket app introduced
2018 - People Mover conducts 6-month electric bus test in partnership with Solid Waste Services
2019 - Transit on the Move project results in creation of formal transit plan

2020's
| 2021 - Bike racks upgraded to include child, adult, and fat tire bikes
2022 - Addition of 11 new 40' People Mover buses and 14 22' AnchorRIDES vehicles
2023 - People Mover mStop app for trip planning and bus tracking debuts, new tech upgrades installed on buses and at select stops
