Downtown Transit Center Reopening
The Downtown Transit Center, located at the 6th Avenue Parking Mall, will reopen its doors effective Tuesday, December 3rd, 2024. Customer Service operations will resume, and riders will once again have access to an indoor waiting area and public restrooms.
Providing a safe, warm, and welcoming area for riders waiting to catch their next bus is a top priority for Mayor LaFrance and the Public Transportation Department (PTD). We recognize that the closure of the Transit Center during the past 4 years has been challenging and inconvenient for many bus riders. People Mover is happy to welcome you back to the Downtown Transit Center.

Project History
The 6th Avenue Parking Garage, often referred to as the "Transit Center," is owned and operated by the Anchorage Community Development Authority (ACDA). In August 2020, People Mover's Customer Service office was relocated to 7th Avenue by ACDA to accommodate preparations for ACDA's planned 6th Avenue Redevelopment Project. This temporary relocation was intended to allow demolition work inside the building to begin.
However, since 2020, the redevelopment project has faced various challenges and delays. Last month, ACDA ended its partnership with the proposed developers. In response, MOA Administration and the PTD partnered with ACDA to reopen the indoor waiting area for riders while ACDA reassesses its redevelopment plans for the property.
Transit Center Study
In June 2023, the Public Transportation Department initiated a 14-month long study to determine the best location for a transit center. Looking at locations in Midtown and downtown, 3 sites were selected in downtown as possible locations. No official determination has been made at this point.
