The Assembly Youth Representative is a special position on the Anchorage Assembly reserved for an individual between the ages of 16-19 to share in the visioning of Anchorage's future.

​​​ Mika Bell wears a black shirt, smiles from a red sculptureMika Bell is a senior at Service High School. He has been an active member of Student Government and ASD's Student Advisory Board since 9th grade. As a member of Anchorage Youth Vote (a non-partisan initiative of the League of Women Voters), he has advocated for civic education and empowering youth voices. He enjoys reading manga and science fiction novels, running, mountain biking, dancing, and drawing. As a queer, gender non-conforming Alaskan, Mika is proud to represent his peers on the Anchorage Assembly.

Over the years, they have become an active member of the community through volunteering with their mom for clothing drives, backpack drives, and so on. Outside of School, they enjoy dance, art, science, skateboarding, make up, and fashion and is a youth secretary for the NAACP that takes pride in helping her community as both a black and LGBT+ student. After graduation, she plans to pursue art and became a concept character designer for shows, games, and movies.​

​​​​About the Position

What is it?

An amazing opportunity to learn firsthand about how our local government works! 

In this role, the Youth Representative will meet leaders in the Municipality, connect with community organizations and provide voice to the issues that shape the future of Anchorage. 

The Youth Representative is a non-voting member of the Anchorage Assembly.​ As the Youth Representative, you will be seated with the Assembly during regular and special meetings, you will receive the presentations given at those meetings and you might join committees and participate in work sessions and informal meetings. 

Who is it for? 

Any Anchorage resident (for at least a year) between the ages of 16-19.  If you're old enough to vote, you must be registered.

What is the time commitment?

Regular Assembly Meetings are generally twice a month, every other Tuesday evening from approximately 5-11pm.  

Outside of Assembly Meetings, you are welcome to attend special meetings and worksessions, which are scheduled on an as-needed basis.

The terms for the Youth Representative are for the academic year.

Who will help me?

You will receive training and orientation from the Chair or Municipal Clerk and may receive mentorship from an Assembly Member.

An alternate will also be selected who may attend meetings if you can't.  ​
