In advance of the April 8 Regular Assembly Meeting, Assembly Member
Karen Bronga issued the following statement regarding AO 2025-25 and AO 2025-28, which are scheduled for public
hearings this evening:
“When I introduced these ordinances, I set out to start a meaningful
conversation among community stakeholders and the public about the safety of
our children in a society with access to deadly weapons. These are stressful
times which call for local action to promote a culture of safety and
accountability.
I want to thank everyone who has offered their insights on this topic and
engaged in this dialogue. Based on your feedback, it is my intent to postpone
both ordinances indefinitely and replace AO 2025-25 with a resolution which
calls upon our community to encourage gun safety.
It is my sincere hope that substituting the ordinance with this resolution
grounds our discussion in real solutions to make our schools and community
safer within existing parameters and foster a meaningful dialogue with all
stakeholders towards more commitment from the State to care, protect, and help
our youth succeed.”
The unnumbered resolution is set to be laid-on-the-table during the April 8 Regular Assembly Meeting and supports the following:
A public education campaign about gun safety and parental responsibility, coordinated in a partnership between the Anchorage School District and Anchorage Police Department;
A violence interruption program for schools found to have increased incidents involving deadly weapons;
Common-sense gun legislation through the Alaska State Legislature; and
A call to parents to teach gun safety, safely store weapons, and encourage open lines of communication.
AO 2025-25 and AO 2025-28 were introduced on February 11, 2025 and discussed during an Assembly worksession on Friday, April 4.
