Avalanche Safety
Avalanches can occur without warning in the Municipality. Awareness of avalanche danger is necessary to remain safe.

- If you live in an avalanche area, make a plan for how you will leave the area, and take your emergency kit(s) when you leave.
- Be aware of avalanche conditions when travelling. Avalanches often cover major roadways in Southcentral Alaska.
- Have an avalanche beacon, helmet, avalanche probe, shovel and avalanche airbag with you when recreating in an avalanche area
- Know the signs of avalanche
- Shooting cracks across slopes
- Other recent avalanches in the area
Stay Safe During an Avalanche:
- Use and carry safety equipment and rescue gear
- If someone you are with is buried, call 9-1-1 and begin searching if it is safe to do so
- If you have the training, treat others for suffocation, hypothermia, traumatic injury and shock
