Utility Outages & Energy Emergency

Utility Outages can occur in the Municipality and may last several days

It is important to know what to do when utility outages happen due to wind, snow, flooding or other causes.

Before the outage:

  • Know what utilities you have: Electricity, gas, water, wastewater
  • Determine which appliances uses each utility
  • Determine what will, and will not, work when each utility is out
  • Make a plan for:
    • How to power your medical devices, or use alternate devices during outages
    • Extra water for medical needs
    • Ways to refrigerate medicines
  • Register your medical device with your electricity and water provider
  • Install smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in your home

During the outage:
  • Use your emergency plan
  • Keep freezers and refrigerators closed (refrigerators will keep food cold for about 4 hours, full freezers will keep food frozen for about 48 hours)
  • Use a generator, but ONLY outdoors 20 feet from windows, doors and attached garages
  • Do not use a gas stove or oven to heat your home
  • Unplug appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges
  • Consider emergency sanitation recommendations
After the outage:
  • Throw away any spoiled food-When in doubt, throw it out!
  • If power is out more than a day, throw away medication that should be refrigerated.  Consult your doctor or pharmacist for a new supply.
