Wildfire Preparedness

The Municipality can have large wildfires, you need to be prepared to survive them

To survive a large wildfire, there are things you can do to be prepared:

Before a Wildfire:
  • Make a plan
  • Create a kit
  • Decide on a meeting location in your neighborhood, out of your neighborhood and out of town if you have to leave
  • Know how officials will talk to you
  • Decide at least two ways to leave your home to stay safe
  • Make digital copies of important documents and store in a secure digital space
  • Update or review your homeowners or renters insurance every year
  • Understand your exposure to wildfire on your property
During a Wildfire:
  • Keep phone charged and listen to officials for current emergency information and instructions
  • Choose a room to close off from outside air and set up a portable air cleaner/filter to keep air clean from smoke
  • Leave immediately to stay safe if officials tell you to
  • If trapped, call 911 and give your location.  Turn on lights to help people find you.
  • Use an N95 mask to keep particles out of the air you breathe
  • Stay out of the area until officials say it is safe
After a Wildfire:
  • Do not return until officials say it is safe
  • Avoid hot ash, charred trees, debris and embers.  The ground may have heat pockets that can burn you or start another fire.
  • Be aware of trees that may fall suddenly, do not walk under trees that have been burned
  • Take pictures of damage and inventory damaged items.  Contact your insurance company for assistance.
  • Send text messages instead of calling as phone lines need to stay open for emergencies.
  • Clean home and property safely
    • Wear gloves, long sleeved shirts, long pants and closed toe shoes to protect skin.  Also wear goggles and an N95.
    • Lightly wet ash down before cleaning to keep ash from getting into the air
    • Try not to bring ash back into buildings, take off shoes at the door, wipe down pets with a damp towel when coming in from outside.
    • Clean everything with ash on it with dishsoap.
    • Do not eat any food, beverages or medication that has been exposed to burn debris or ash.
    • Ash may contain toxins due to synthetic materials being burned
