Community Garden Strategic Plan
In 2015, the Municipality of Anchorage (MOA) Parks Department and the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) partnered to better understand the needs and opportunities for expanding community gardens within the city of Anchorage.
The result is an examination of the role these gardens can play in improving citizen’s quality of life by expanding the community’s capacity to increase food security and improving access to healthy local foods throughout the greater Anchorage area.
Since this effort, the Municipality of Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department has increased resources to the community garden program and implemented numerous changes to improve gardener experience. These changes include online registration, volunteer clean up and education events, as well as much needed upgrades to garden infrastructure. Additionally, the city has added new plots to existing gardens and is currently working to plan and design new community gardens.
