Anchorage Parks and Recreation

Rewilding Anchorage

In 2024, Anchorage Parks and Recreation started implementing rewilding around the borders of select parks by creating No-Mow Zones. These reductions in mowing will help create more sustainable landscapes, increase habitat for insects and wildlife, and encourage native plant growth.

No-Mow Zones

No-mow zones are designated areas that are only mown one to two times per year to encourage native plants and grasses to grow. Areas throughout Anchorage have been selected as no-mow zones based on present natural resources such as wetlands/streams, their size, and current uses. These areas include:

  • Dave Rose Park
  • KFQD Park
  • Whisper Faith Kovach Park
  • Sitka Street Park
  • Jewel Lake Park
  • Chugach Foothills Park
  • Emerald Hills Park
  • Taku Lake Park
  • Eastchester Park

No-Mow Benefits

  • Reduce carbon emissions
  • Builds sustainable landscapes and prevents erosion into waterways
  • Stengthens root systems for better water quality and drainage
  • Encourages native plant growth
  • Increases habitat for wildlife.
